Internal Expanse

Patrick D. Wilson's avatar Patrick D. Wilson

Internal Expanse is a work about the unique space created by abstraction in Islamic ornament. In many Islamic architectural forms, much of the available space is consumed by high levels of information in the form of ornament. The “consumed” space, rather than enclosing the viewer, creates an expansion of imaginary space. As the abstract geometric space provides no cue as to its scale, the viewer must assign an imaginary scale ranging from the infinitesimal to the infinite. Internal Expanse uses familiar materials and implies a type of shelter or furnishing, while the scale and visual density challenges the viewer to extend their perceptive ability beyond the limits of rational space. These divergent possibilities allow the viewer to feel the interaction between their visual imagination and their body’s intuitive kinesthetic sense.
