Holland Bowl Mill collaboration: Dialogue; 4-2018; 20” x 20” x 20”; Beech, Maple, paint/dye, found objects. I am currently considering what famed sculptor Barbara Hepworth referred to as “the absence” vs. “the presence”. Rather than work with volumes that are defined by light falling upon their exteriors, I am exploring light/shadow and positive/negative space as physical aspects of a composition. With this collaboration, I used wooden bowls as proxies for people or parties who are entering into dialogue. The bowls were stood on edge to establish a human-like relationship. Facing them toward one another seemed closed, literally, but having them “back into the conversation” seemed rather akin to reality. This allowed for an area of intrusion that presents the potential for interaction and dialogue. The complementary color spectrums around this zone allude to contrary emotions or intentions as do the treatments of the shapes and edges.
