For Art Prize, we’ve conjured a "Freedom School", an installation & performance guiding those interested in liberation through 17 rituals. We offer the experience as a gift from a community of Detroit teachers & artists to the people of Grand Rapids. We've built: A world that question the existing "answers". A safe space to imagine alternative solutions, to heal & reckon & to access new powers both as individuals & as constellations of communal energy. We present a sanctuary reclaiming education by celebrating spiritual literacy & creativity—in honor of ancestral beach-side gatherings of enslaved people risking life to learn to read & liberate, the Southern Freedom Schools that emerged in the 1960’s & current Freedom Educators responding to inadequate public school systems. Through performance & installation, we re-center lessons we should've received from the start, preparing us for a life that demands wholeness in the face of hardship & action in the face of injustice.
