By Her Own Hand is an installation specific to the site of Fountain St. Church’s main sanctuary. Two films project through a mass of fabric suspended high, best viewed at the balcony level next to the stained glass. The fabric mass also collects the light filtering inside from the stained glass panels, on the East side in the morning and on the West side in the afternoon. The films are life/death/life-cycle stories held in abstraction. Women fall into the traditional role of custodian at times of birth & death and roles in leadership are often underrepresented, most notably in the church hierarchy, and even in an institution as progressive as Fountain St. Church. The stop-motion images take direct symbolism of the stained glass’ dominant red & blue. The law of blue is light. It appears in the sky after a rain and suggests the unveiling of truth. The law of red is love, hate, and sovereign power. Blue provides light in the windows, giving value to the red color only by opposition.
