Coriolis force is an inertial force that acts on objects that are in motion relative to a rotating reference frame. Coriolis force is an integral part of shaping life on Earth. It is responsible for complex global wind and ocean currents, determining large-scale weather patterns and the flow of life around them. Some of humanity’s greatest achievements lie in understanding the simplest components of nature’s functioning. The Coriolis sculpture invites the viewer to meditate upon the power of nature. As the sculpture spins, fire is woven in a cyclone pattern while air flows in toroidal currents around it. This sculpture acts as a window through which the viewer may become aware of the miracle of our world’s creative forces. Coriolis was sculpted with respect for the Earth using re-purposed materials found in Detroit, Michigan. It’s geometric pattern was plasma-cut by hand as a meditative exploration of the discipline of movement and force through the human body.
