Ties That Bind

Kate Meyer's avatar Kate Meyer

Ties That Bind is an abstract exploration of the interplay between memory and time, trauma and healing, our past and our future using beeswax, pigment, metal, glass, and mirror. Three pieces are windows to the past, a glimpse into the memories our minds wander over again and again. We forge these neurological pathways to retain the ties to our past, ensuring that we leave a trace so that we can understand where we've been as we seek to solve the mystery of who we are. Six pieces document the the shields we use to protect ourselves during traumatic experiences. Some are obvious, like anger, withdrawal, and unhealthy risk-taking. Others are more subtle, like the mask of beauty that many of us wear to fool ourselves into believing that everything is ok. Three pieces will include fragments of mirror, reflecting the transformation we endure as we begin to see ourselves fully. We may not recognize ourselves after trauma, yet as we heal and transform the reflection shifts. Will we recognize ourselves?
