The Pull

Nicole Van Dyken's avatar Nicole Van Dyken

The Pull is a visual representation of my interpretation of the inner struggle of someone living with anxiety & depression. I’ve used the human figure along with surreal imagery to depict what it might be like to feel “The Pull” of anxiety and “The Pull” of depression simultaneously. This peice is meant not only to show the struggle but to also show the strength it takes to live with it. You’ll notice a jungle landscape which represents anxiety. The jungle can often be seen as fearsome with its lush and wild plant-life hiding what may lurk inside. The smoke opposite the jungle represents depression as it can feel like being in a fog or haze. The human figure illustrated the way you might see it in medical book, has both wrists roped, being pulled in both directions but appears to be fighting it just as someone struggling with both diagnoses. In the background you’ll see words and thoughts that are usually associated with anxiety or depression. You’ll also see nerve cells and serotonin.
