Thunderhead

Zach Mory's avatar Zach Mory

Having grown up in the Midwest, I've always been intrigued by the large storms that would roll through the area. I have many memories from growing up of my dad and I standing outside or by the window watching tornado producing storms roll through while everyone else was in the basement. Even as a child, I understood what the sublime felt like; a sense of beauty and awe in nature that simultaneously invoked feelings of attraction and terror. With this drawing, I've tried to recapture that sense of awe, beauty and terror using a grainy scribbling technique to slowly build up the surface in marks. This piece becomes almost surreal as I make shapes and erase areas as I'm working to create an alien and ghostlike effect. This painstaking process of intuitively building up the surface with a calligraphic scribbling, allows for mistakes and chaos to shine through as the the piece slowly comes into focus.
