'Five'

On June 7, 2016, a pickup truck plowed into a group of nine bicyclists from the Kalamazoo area, killing five of them. This tragic incident left the community reeling with shock and grief. Some of the victims were from Richland, where I had resided for 20 years, so I was familiar with several of the individuals and their families. It was impossible not to be deeply moved by the senselessness of it, and by the sudden, unexplainable loss for the loved ones and the community. ‘Five’ is a tribute to the five individuals whose lives were taken on that day, and in honor of them, as a metal artist, I was compelled to build a large ‘ghost bike’ (it’s 6’ tall by 11’ long). I created the five flowers to represent the beautiful lives that were lost on that day. It was important to me that the flowers be vibrant in color and the focal point, as were those lives. My hope in exhibiting 'Five' is that the victims will be honored and remembered.
