Order in the Unexpected

When we try to have control of our lives, it often doesn’t work out the way we planned. The process is key in creating my work. I use watercolor – an uncontrollable medium – and attempt to control it by creating contrast and order on the picture plane. My process of putting delicate squares together into a grid is an invitation to come close and appreciate each square, but also to step back and see the work as a whole. In the unpredictable world we live in, the ritual of pattern-making by gluing each square has taught me the importance of slowing down, appreciating what comes next, and paying attention to detail. The unexpected, although uncomfortable, is necessary for our lives, and often allows everything to fall into place.
