Moving Experience

“A Moving Experience” - At the conclusion of a prior ArtPrize, I mentioned to my family how I missed being able to walk around and see the other artwork. As a performing artist, I am my art and must be a part of my exhibit. My grandson said that’s how he feels sitting at school sometimes, when he wants to be playing outside. I began to consider other situations where people feel trapped, unable to get out of a situation; there are many examples in today’s news - - stuck in a minimum wage job, or an apartment, or an addiction. I decided to create a character who finds a way to break free and explore new things. At the 2017 World Living Statue Championship in the Netherlands, I saw many styles of performing statues. I was intrigued by some that looked like illustrations from the pages of a book. I have spent this year working on the technique and refining a character, who will be able to escape from the pages of his comic book to explore Michigan and visit ArtPrize. The story will be told through the eyes of my grandson (with a video filmed and edited by his father, my son Tim Shangle) as an eccentric character from his comic book escapes into real life, goes out into the world, then returns to his own place. This character, who I have given the name of “Trebor”, will enjoy experiencing ArtPrize with all the visitors who come from many places for the adventure. Visit my venue to see the video and comic book, and get hints to where Trebor may be found that day. If you find him, please join him in viewing all of the art and exploring Grand Rapids.
