West Michigan Through a Southern Lens

With my ArtPrize entry I would like to showcase the varied beauty of West Michigan from the perspective of someone who did not grow up here but has family roots here. Though I spent the first thirty years of my life in Texas, hardly a year passed without at least one trip to visit my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins in Michigan. To me--a boy traveling north in the middle of summer with its endless days, pristine beaches, and sunsets that stilled the passage of time--Michigan was a bright paradise away from the sweltering heat of my home town, Austin. I never dreamed that I would one day move to Michigan, meet the love of my life, and make it my home. Through photography I have discovered how beautiful and unique West Michigan is year-round, in all seasons. I hope my photos convey the exhilaration I have felt exploring my new, sometimes bone-chillingly cold home through a southerner's lens.
