Sleeper Box Park

Cate Strumbos's avatar Cate Strumbos

This piece considers the disappearing lifestyle of the long-haul trucker given the accelerating promise of fully autonomous vehicles. With the success of Uber’s Otto delivering Budweiser on a short-haul delivery in October 2016, it is only a matter of time before deep learning AI will solve the industry’s biggest issue: an aging workforce and driver shortages. Although the lifestyle represents freedom and the open road, it is a tough and lonely existence. Long-haul drivers typically spend months on the road. These sleeper cabs are their homes. Like the disappearing cowboy lifestyle a century ago, this piece of Americana’s days are numbered. There will be 3 sleeper boxes in total. Each box will be elevated on stilts with a walk-up platform. There will be a plexi-glass window with the curtain drawn so that people can see into the home and life of the American trucker. The sleeper boxes will be mounted on varying height pedestals creating a park-like or tree-house environment.
