The inspiration for my piece comes from my personal experience. My husband was in the Marine Corps and was a part of the first response team after the 9/11 attacks. When he left for the 15th MEU on 8/11/2001, he was a 24 year old, with a young adventurous heart, and always the life of the party. When he returned war had forever changed him. It was as if the battle field had taken part of him. He was my best friend. I never left his side. We struggled over the next 10 years to find him peace. He was experiencing irritability, night terrors, intense stress, and even started to experiencing black-out rage. One day the symptoms of post traumatic stress became so bad he went to the emergency room; where, he was met with the same options he had been given time and time again. At the end of the visit we were feeling hopeless. Then a social worker came in and took one look at him, and offered him a hug. That moment the light started to come back into our lives.
