"Childhood" is a photography-based mixed media piece mounted behind an antique window frame. Drawing inspiration from visits to the Lake Michigan shore in my youth, I chose six locales suffused with personal memories of family members no longer living. My intention was to create a “window to the past” both nostalgic and wistful in tone. The panes of antique glass allow the viewer to see both the artwork and their own reflection simultaneously. This serves the dual and contradictory purpose of both incorporating the viewer into the piece and barring them from truly entering into the world they observe. This is intended as a metaphor concerning our most visceral memories which often feel immediate and fresh but are, in reality, lost moments forever out of reach.
