My artwork is inspired by the marginalized and dispossessed of our society. These particular paintings are from a body of work focused on encounters with the homeless population of Los Angeles, where I live and work. Troubled by witnessing the living conditions of the homeless I had to work through my experiences and mixed emotions, the natural way for me to do that was to confront it with art. I volunteer with Lamp and other organizations, getting to know the community and hardships of the individuals who live on the city streets. Gary Brown is a formerly homeless artist and musician who is now a torchbearer in the community. Other paintings depict individuals who dwell on the streets for years at a time, in and out of the missions, hospitals and prisons, lost in the bureaucracies of city, legal and myriad support agencies. A portion of any sales will be donated to organizations working for the homeless.
