Waiting for the Unicorn

Nancy MacLachlan's avatar Nancy MacLachlan

Two of my granddaughters were patiently waiting for "the unicorn" to appear. They had spent a week at our family camp in the three- and four- year old program talking about the camp's mysterious visitor and learning camp songs. This was the last day of camp, and the staff had painted faces and helped the kids make and decorate their own unicorn horns. It was also past nap time, and these were two pretty tired little girls, but too excited to quit waiting! Soon enough, after enough camp songs were sung, a white horse complete with unicorn horn galloped by, and the "wizard" riding it dropped a bag of candy. Looks of amazement replaced the expectant, dreamy looks captured in this image. I painted this from a photo I took of them that had stuck in my head, and my grandma's heart, for a few years.
