Faces of My Community

Jesse Mireles's avatar Jesse Mireles

My entry is a series of abstract portraits of people who have wandered into my life but don’t know that they have become subjects for my art. Something about their features and personalities has inspired me to sketch them and turn their stories into abstract prints. These folks have impressed me, as much by their interesting facial features, as by their character, or their attire, rather than who they are, or their station in life. These are people who have simply caught an artist’s imagination—my imagination—and have unwittingly willed me to portray them in my art. It’s a reminder and a celebration of folks that make up our communities. Authors, poets, and songwriters, often write informally about people they have observed or about characters who in some way inspired a creative line or thought. My entry is likewise informal, comprised of four giclée prints from a larger body of work, which I intend to grow well beyond this competition. They may be displayed as a unit or separately.
