Unlearn Fear + Hate

Kurt + Kremena

Unlearn Fear + Hate, Kurt Gohde & Kremena Todorova's latest community driven artwork, aims to promote public dialog through temporary and permanent activations of the words “Unlearn Fear + Hate.” Inspired by a need to address growing national tensions, Unlearn Fear + Hate invites everyone to work to diminish the fears we all live with by acknowledging our shared humanity and fostering community. The words “unlearn fear and hate” come from a commissioned poem by Frank X Walker. For ArtPrize Nine, Kurt & Kremena have stenciled their Unlearn Fear + Hate "halo" design in a mosaic-like pattern in the 25 most popular languages spoken in Grand Rapids. Their artwork invites visitors to the square to interact with it in a number of ways, including by taking selfies of their feet within a halo and sharing the message on social media.

About Kurt + Kremena

Kurt Gohde & Kremena Todorova have worked collaboratively for 10 years, creating art at the periphery of American culture, where drag queens, discarded couches, and abandoned motel signs live. They have traveled to Los Angeles, Indianapolis, New Orleans, Boulder, Cincinnati, San Antonio, Portland, and Bulgaria to create artworks that strengthen communities.
