Food Fight

H.J. Slider's avatar H.J. Slider

Food Fight is essentially a group of shoe and utensil forms created from found and recycled wood. They represent human beings and their relationships to food consumption in our society. The spoons and forks become figures in motion-- pleading, gathering, discarding, comforting, beckoning, defending, grabbing, sharing. The task of acquiring adequate nutrition is an on-going struggle for one in seven people in Kent County. Hunger effects people of all ages, sizes, genders, races, lifestyles-- represented by the variety in shoe size and style. These inanimate objects become personified for me when placed in the ancient "musk ox" configuration-- larger, stronger individuals grouped protectively around the more vulnerable who gather inside the circle. The text applied to the shoe surfaces expresses some of the concerns our fellow citizens face as they seek to feed themselves & their families. My hope is that viewers will be inspired to find a place in the outer ring of this fight and act to help correct the imbalance between those experiencing food scarcity and those living with food abundance.
