Something Gained Something Lost

Something Gained Something Lost was completed in Southern France during the summer of 2016. The project addresses issues related to hydraulic fracturing used in oil and natural gas extraction. Although France bans fracking, the process is used extensively throughout the US leading to environmental degradation and dangers to human health. The piece is similar to a scroll in which the viewer can never really comprehend its entirety at one time. Executed with Sumi ink on thin, transparent plastic, the images can be experienced from all sides. The work conforms and reacts to the exhibit space, and, like the landscape it represents, the piece is vulnerable to touch and the effects of human interaction. Plastics, oil and natural gas are ubiquitous parts of our everyday lives. By using plastic as the support for my imagery, I raise questions about sustainability and the difficulties of retreating from an industry that is so enmeshed in every aspect of our economy.
