Girls Own

Creative Youth Center

Girls Own is a collaborative piece by the girls in the Creative Youth Center’s Amplify program. Inspired by Jamaica Kincaid’s nonfiction piece Girl, the CYC girls reflected on their experiences as girls and young women. Their creative nonfiction--about what they do, what they're told, and what the world looks like around them--encompasses what it means to be a girl. Each student also created a screen print to accompany their piece. Together, the prints and writing create a chapbook where girls own their identity as women. Girls Own is a collection that empowers girls to redefine girlhood by their own standards and show the world how awesome it is to be a girl.

About Creative Youth Center

The Creative Youth Center prepares kids for life’s adventures by supporting their writing and amplifying their voices. Last school year Amplify, the CYC's creative writing program for middle school students, was made up of 11 girls from across Grand Rapids. Brett Colley helped with the drawing and print-making process.
