For-profit Education

Sarah Ellis's avatar Sarah Ellis

As a public school teacher I deeply value free and quality education for all. Unfortunately, recently there has been a shift in legislation to favor for-profit education. My piece “For Profit Education” asks the question “What are we truly teaching our children to value?” I have used casts of Plato as a metaphor to education and the hammer as recent legislation. The video starts off with a quote from the ancient Greek philosopher Plato “Education is teaching our children to desire the right things.” The viewer then sees a hand line up four plaster casts of Plato, a hammer comes on the screen and proceeds to smash each one. Coins fly from the casts and are picked up in slow motion.
