Fever Dream

Drawing inspiration from the Chicago Imagists and from Karl Wirsum in particular, this drawing is a highly coded homage and an exploration of subconscious undercurrents. My drawing is an extension from a mask series I began last summer. This new piece is approximately five and a half feet tall which focuses on heavily coded, nearly abstract imagery. Body parts, faces, mouths, hair, and fluids all spill out onto the surface to form a nearly indecipherable accumulation of marks and shaky line work. I've always been fascinated with symbols and archetypes, yet I don't like to be overtly obvious with them. The figures and line work will stack on top of and billow out from each other, exploring the boundary between subconscious mark-making and deliberate image making. This will be my sixth year participating in Artprize and I was lucky enough to be a top five jurors pick in 2014 with my Circles and Diamonds series. I'm looking forward to participating again in Artprize 2017!
