Collection number three, Standing Rock Reservation and The Oil Pipeline

Angel Casarez's avatar Angel Casarez

The meaning behind "Collection number three Standing Rock Reservation and The Oil Pipeline" is to bring insight of what is still wrong with our country and society. My collection consists of four wearable art dresses that consist of two long and two short. All four dresses are inspired by culture and traditions of the planes Indians and controversy of the oil pipeline. For example the dress that is featured on my profile was inspired by Lakota pottery. This dress consists of a black tulle ball gown skirt that represents oil and a shawl that is hand painted with Lakota pottery designs with pieces of mirror signifying reflection of the past, present and future. Also a black veil representing the mourning of mother earth adorned with pieces of mirror coming down the front of the veil to look as if tears are coming down. I'm a designer who's niche focuses on social issues, I tend to find beauty in dark situations. I feel that what we wear can tell endless stories about ourselves.
