The samurai, like European knights, were not simply heavily armed warriors but members of a distinct and rigid social hierarchy: their role in war and peace clearly defined and highly respected. The artist's use of modern, recycled materials to create this hollow armor urges us to interrogate the liminal, ambiguous role of modern soldiers in our own society. Who are they? Why do they fight, and what measures do we take to protect them? The drawing blade further suggests a state of perpetual tension. For the modern soldier war is always close at hand.
