The Real Majority

Jessica Kalumbula's avatar Jessica Kalumbula

The Real Majority was inspired by my longing for our society to focus on our commonality and resist the polarity promoted by our political climate. It is meant to speak to the power of perception. I want to encourage us to loosen our unyielding devotion to "red" and "blue" parties, and instead embrace our commonality with purple. My intention is to replace "battle-ground" mentality with "common-ground" action. The Real Majority has 3 components which reflect my interpretation of the presidential election and vision of healing for our nation. The first piece shows our country covered with right and left handprints of over 65 individuals; all colors used were made combining red, white and blue paint. The second piece displays a map with each state painted a shade of purple made from proportionate mixing of red and blue paint which correspond to actual election results data. The third piece shows the states morphed into equalized sizes and aligned in a purple continuum with words along it
