The Lighthouse

Allen Deming's avatar Allen Deming

The Lighthouse is a cedar strip-built 12' solo canoe bearing marquetry inlays depicting over on dozen lighthouses from Lake Michigan's shore. All veneer inlays have been handcrafted by the artist as replicas of the iconic sentinel's that guard our shores. The Lighthouse is a Mackinaw Watercraft, Pere Marquette model canoe designed by artist. It is made in the strip-built monocoque construction method. If features many species of wood including Northern White Cedar, Walnut, California Redwood, Oak and Cherry. (All woods used by the artist are reclaimed or sustainable harvested.) The canoe weights just 34 pounds and is paddled with a double bladed kayak paddle. Allen is a self taught boat designer, builder and artist. His creations he hopes will foster a closer relationship between the paddler and nature.
