CHICAGO FLAG- 5TH STAR Driving through downtown Chicago I see the municipal flag proudly hung in windows-blue and white stripes, and four six-pointed stars. Each star proudly represents the city’s major historical events. In 2016, Chicago reached another milestone to place on its flag – 762 murders, 3,550 shootings, 4,331 shooting victims – the deadliest year in almost two decades. This dangerous city is my home. My 3D mixed media sculpture expresses the anguish of seeing lives lost to gun violence. Viciousness of drugs, gangs, and racial divide is shooting Chicago apart. My addition of a fifth shattered star to a worn, bullet-ridden Chicago flag brings awareness of the immediacy of a grave problem. This free-standing large wood sculpture commands attention at 5 ft. height x 10 ft. length. I invite the viewer to examine images, thoughts, and holes placed throughout the composition, in hopes of stirring emotion into action of positive change. *sculpture currently in progress
