A Walk in the Woods: The Photo Series

A Walk in the Woods: The Photo Series. This series, inspired by nature, is an ongoing exploration of mediums (drawings, photographs, and encaustics). I unveiled the first part of this artistic journey with my pencil drawing series during ArtPrize 2016. That series of drawings placed in the top five of Center City while it was displayed at DeVos Place. For ArtPrize 2017, I am continuing my theme of winter, when the land is silent, stripped down and pure. I am awed by the sheer impact of unsentimental patterns bent and broken, intrigued by the complex quality of fallen trees. Their manic lines and texture speak to a powerful natural abstraction. My medium for 2017 is iPhoneography. Last year’s pencil drawing “Fractured Patterns” took over a 1000 hours to draw. I gained a deep understanding through a micro study of place with each inch becoming like chapters in a book until the whole novel was completed. I was part of every branch, every twig and every flake of snow. This year I will be exhibiting photographs. My iPhoneography is more akin to poetry. It’s about the moment, pure and simple composition and a mood that is very mysterious and lyrical. Each of these photos has about five layers of texture, giving them a slightly surreal and haunting feel. This year's series of six photos are fused onto a sheet of aluminum and floated on linen giving them the found object look of a vintage photography plate.
