Weathered The Storm

Cindy Rosier's avatar Cindy Rosier

Weathered The Storm is a reminder and a tribute to any storm that might pass through our lives. It is an exploration on rebuilding in the aftermath; despite any scars that remind us of what we have been through and the triumph of how far we have come. Scars from past stormy events may have dotted our landscape with skeletal remains that might resemble this tree. As a child, I watched my grandparent’s neighbors freeing their homes from a forest of debris strewn about by a tornado that nearly leveled Monticello Indiana on April 3, 1974; only to watch my community join together and rebuild from a tornado that twisted Portland Michigan from end to end on June 22, 2015. Battered and beaten; this tree celebrates that arduous rebuilding spirit. Every wooden element was hand carved and assembled piece by piece from lumber back into a shape representative of its organic past. Encircling its branches; these deconstructed canvas and denim spirals, depict a storm gradually brewing into a tornado. Snaking its trunk; present day images of a renewed Monticello and Portland vine through a pile of leaves, withered by post tornado images from their uprooted past.
