An Inch out of Reach

Nathaniel Yenger's avatar Nathaniel Yenger

Lan stands calmly looking out the window into the market and recollects about the last time she saw her mother, 8 years ago. She remembers listening to an argument over something and an agreement being made and then her mother telling her that she would stay with the man she now calls "Uncle." She can't wait for the day that she might go back to her village to see her mother again, but for now, she has to do what Uncle says. And Uncle needs her to comfort his friends. There is a beauty and wonder in the chaos of Vietnam but also a dark underground sickness. This painting is meant to bring that sickness out into the light; to bring awareness of the horror of human trafficking. Lan is representing one of millions of women all over the world, that have lost their freedom, the freedom that is often so close, but yet so far away, just An Inch Out Of Reach.
