Grandfather’s Friend, and Arrival Times

Many of my life-size figures are based on people from a village in Shoaxing, China, where generations of my ancestors lived until the time of the Cultural Revolution. During my first visit to China about 7 years ago, I visited this village and spoke with residents who actually remembered my grandparents from over 50 years ago. It was a pivotal experience for me, one that inspired me to become an artist. Through my work, I am attempting to understand the fragile connections to people and culture, and examine whether those connections, once broken, can be restored. In this ongoing series, I’m working to recreate the residents of that village one by one. These five seated figures are a part of that body of work, but are inspired by a specific memory of my relatives gathered together to discuss arrangements for my ailing grandfather.
