This is part of a series of family paintings based on my mother's French heritage, stemming from the region of Bretagne. Here you see my mother in the upper left, and her sister in the lower right. They are dressed in the traditional costume of their region in Bretagne, Leuhan, in Finistere. The hats, or coiffe, are made of lace and are a tradition in this region. I painted my mother and aunt, as they are now, then dressed them in clothing that they may have worn as young girls, attending special ceremonies such as weddings or celebrations for saints.
