Depths of Michigan

I started my piece of art with a hand drawn map of Michigan. I developed symbols that represent the various landmarks, museums, sports teams, businesses, parks, animals and many other things that are important to the state. I placed these symbols on the map, in their appropriate places. I used many layers and allowed the symbols to overlap. Once the symbols covered the entire map, I used washes of colors to fill in the canvas but allowed for all the original symbols to be seen. I then added a few more layers using the most common symbols in different scale and color to create more interest and overlap. I then studied the shapes created by the multiple layers and searched for what the final piece of art would become. This piece developed into a melding of Michigan symbols. It has the state mammal, flower, bird, tree, wildfower, stone, fish and reptile all represented while allowing the underlayers to be visible to illustrate the depths of Michigan.
