The Big Catch

Charlie and John

Michigan has a rich history of fishing lure manufacturers dating back to the early 1900's. We feel that the lures they produced were true works of art, therefore we have composed an assortment of giant antique fishing lures made of wood and metal to honor those works. Our lures have been hand carved, and hand painted just like the original ones that you might find in your grandfathers tackle box, but ours are approximately 4 to 6 feet long. They have been styled after the most common and recognizable lures from the past. It was our goal to replicate these works to a gigantic size and give homage to the fine lure makers that have become part of the soul of our great state of Michigan. We have carved and painted 12 lures to a much larger scale, so come take a look.

About Charlie and John

My name is John and I am a metal sculpture artist and one of two team members, the other member of the team is another artist named Charlie who is an accomplished chainsaw carver. We have been wanting to collaborate on an Art prize project for several years, we finally came up with the idea of making these large lures. We wanted a project that we could combine both of our skills and something that would be fun also. Charlie has carved the bodies of the lures out of various types of logs, and I did the Metal work and welding aspects such as the hooks, the blades ,spinners and so forth. The painting and design are a combined effort and all have been given 3 coats of clear for an ultra sheen and protection.
