My work traces a personal battle with depression and the hope of rising from it, beginning with tension and conflict to accepting and managing my diagnosis. Detailing my upward journey through a series of self-portraits paired with seascapes photographed on the Great Lakes, Thrive aims to open up a dialogue that challenges a society norm—a norm that says we can’t talk about mental illness out in the open. My desire is for viewers to realize that they too can speak up about their struggles with mental illnesss, and once we get people talking about it in an honest way, we can lift the stigma and thrive. Thrive features 12 digital photographs printed on textured watercolor paper in black frames.
