Underwear is a photojournalistic fine art project that comments on women’s concerns about body image, sexualization and identity. Underwear juxtaposes authentic photographic portraits of women with testimonies of their experiences regarding these issues. This project was born out of my own frustrations and need to understand the triangular intersection of how I value my body, society values my body, and as a Christian, how God values my body. The project was organic: I created an open call and 41 diverse female participants, ages 18 to 57, responded. I photographed the rear because it is a hugely sexualized body part, but counteracted that—as well as retained personality and modesty—by having each woman wear her preferred underwear. Ultimately, I wanted to "toe the line" of objectification in a way that is attention grabbing, but achieves the opposite result. Themes include healthy/unhealthy relationships; media influence; sexual assault; occupation; and a change in fitness or health.
