Triumphal Entry

Triumphal Entry Vote # 64605 I am fascinated by the passage of time and the pathos of change, memory and the loss that it evokes. My work is a physical and conceptual investigation into the power of objects, materials and environments as narrative device. Inspired by the Dada traditions of assemblage, collage, construction and performance, I employ the acts of appropriation, reuse, recontextualization, and function to explore contemporary perceptions of time, community, history and memory. This installation is a celebration of the manufacturing history of Grand Rapids and its reputation as the Furniture Capital. It’s a mad tumble of broken furniture that is part triumphal arch, part amusement park gate, part rustic battlement - an amusing reminder of the history of this city. The crown with rays of light at the center of the arch is inspired by the 1910 trademark for the Imperial Furniture Company, one of a great many furniture manufacturers operating in Grand Rapids one hundred years ago.
