Portraits of Light and Shadow

Joao Paulo Goncalves's avatar Joao Paulo Goncalves
    2016 Winner

Joao Paulo harnesses light and shadows into this pixel-portrait which is created by deliberately angled wood pieces placed in relationship to the mounted light. The nature of pixel art requires the viewer to put distance between himself and the piece to be able to acutely perceive the subject of the art piece. These pieces loses their subject completely if the light source is removed. The image is only revealed in the shadows that have been created. This collections feature 3 different portraits done in the above mentioned form of pixel/shadow art. These portraits are of iconic figures: Martin Luther King Jr., Da Vinci's Mona Lisa, and Vermeer's Girl with the Pearl Earring.
