Under the Purple Sky

I engineer functional sculptures that propose to enlist citizens as well as specialists to collaborate in building sustainable urban food systems. Through research, sculpture, and photography, my work examines the potential of grassroots urban gardening, biodynamic systems, and recent tech innovations to reduce agriculture’s environmental impact and reconnect city dwellers with their food sources. This project will consider Grand Rapids' history of suburban expansion and urban renewal with its current goals of sustainability and civic engagement. Building sculptures from reclaimed materials that function as indoor gardens will position new goals for the production and distribution of food alongside Grand Rapids continued state of flux.
