Corrected Memory of a City_Grand Rapids

Jiyon Hong's avatar Jiyon Hong

This proposed work is about an act of correcting memory of a physical place. I plan to draw a regional map of a Grand Rapids on a piece of paper based on my memory and then project the actual geographical map over the drawing. By marking errors and making corrections on a new layer of tracing paper, I will show the discrepancy between my memory map and the accurate map of the place. All the maps will be removed except the layer with the abstract correction marks. The final stage is 3 dimensionally transforming those marks with fragile materials. The artwork aspires to focus on the memory process and emphasize the changeable character of memory and the change in our surroundings (cities.) For this show, I will also include the sites of the public artworks, which were made for the exhibition, Sculpture off the Pedestal (1973) and show how it changed physically or re-contextualized in the city of Grand Rapids.
