The Waugal

George Wilkinson III's avatar George Wilkinson III

The Waugal, a 3 x 3 foot acrylic on stretched canvas painting. The painting has an isolation coat and varnish. Value: $5,500 (http://www.xiko.se/george-wilkinson-m-29.html for benchmarking) The city does not represent a real city. It is an imagined place, like a biologist’s field drawing. Here, city as organism. Waugal refers an indigenous Australian story of a life-giving water serpent native to the region around Perth. As the story is told, the Waugal slivered through the region shaping its geography. Upon creating the Swan River, it rested beside it, presumably forever. Strangely this location is also the epicenter of Greater Perth, west Australia's only major urban sprawl. I lived in Australia for a decade and upon learning about the Waugal was struck by the juxtaposition of a "life giving serpent" and the appearance of the glowing urban organism. Maybe the Waugal woke up...
