Historic Portrait 1

Tamara Dailey's avatar Tamara Dailey

Historic Portrait 1 is an oil painting inspired by the 1915 photograph by H. G. Kaiser titled “Eskimo Mother and child in furs, Nome, Alaska” from the National Archives collection (www.archives.gov), the painting is the first of a series based on these photographs. The design of the painting is based on the story quilt art assignment I used to give my former high school art students, a painting inspired from the story quilts by one of my favorite artists, Faith Ringgold. The patterns and decorations surrounding the figures are designs from Eskimo artifacts from the book titled “American Indian Design and Decoration” by Le Roy H. Appleton. (Not for sale at this time).
