Aphelion, Hibernation, Contemplation.

This is a two dimensional piece painted in layers of resin to create a three dimensional effect. I am Latina and suffer from alopecia. Because of this, I am fascinated with the relationship people have with hair and race, and the solitude that is created when someone is different. This painting is a physical representation of an idealized/white-washed version of myself, the layers of hair and objects representing how I tend to hide because of the anxiety I feel in a society where women are expected to look a certain way. The term "aphelion" itself means the point in the orbit of a planet at which it is furthest from the sun. In connection with this piece, the term represents how people themselves swing in and out of orbit into solitude because of their insecurities, and how anxiety can push us further away from the people around us. Her hair is swirling, hiding her emotions, acting itself as a cocoon to hide her from the outside world because beauty isn't infinite.
