Profound Perception

"Profound Perception" is a scratchboard drawing of a Western Lowland Gorilla that was inspired by a remarkable ape at the Columbus Zoo. I sketched it from the photo reference I took, then transferred the drawing to the scratchboard using graphite paper. Using a scratch tool I laid in the outlines and major features while focusing on the light source to produce an aura-like effect which was present in my photo reference. My main goal was to try to capture just a small part of the emotion that was portrayed in my original reference. At 98% genetically identical to humans it’s only natural to gaze into the eyes of a gorilla and feel an overwhelming emotional kinship. Our undeniable connection to the other animals on the planet is apparent on many levels, emotionally, intellectually, as well as our intriguingly similar lifestyles. All we have to do is see. The gorilla’s greatest predator is man. Ebola and habitat loss are two more devastating killers of apes.
