A recent artist residency at WavePoolGallery.org in Cincinnati, led to a series of mixed media art on canvas and board based on memories of growing up in Highland County, Ohio. I began with research at the Highland County Historical Society to collect references on pre-civil war homesteads. An area of interest was Gist Settlement. Prior to the Civil War, absentee landowner, Samuel Gist designated plots of land for his freed slaves after his death. This African American settlement was home to about 17 families in the 1950’s but is now a virtual ghost town. In the 1960’s, my father, James Allen, shared memories of playing sports with students from Gist Settlement. He explained the challenges the mixed race team faced while traveling during the very early days of the Civil Rights Movement. These father to daughter talks left an impression on my teenage conscience and now inspiration for my Highland Series.
