Unintentional Levitation

Musing on time and moments in my life that have brought about some kind of transformation, the “bicycle incident” pops out as one my earliest big experiences. I still remember it very vividly, and it’s a wonder that we walked away without more serious injuries. I went for a ride on my new ten speed bike down the biggest hill in our neighborhood. My little sister wanted to go so I let her ride on the frame bar in front of me. Somehow, it was exactly when I think we reached top speed down that hill, that her foot slipped into the wheel hub and created an instant catapult that sent us flying through the air. We laid on the ground groaning in pain for a long time. Finally, an older couple who always walked on our street, came by and scraped us up off the asphalt and carried us home. I think it was at this point that I realized I was not just some invincible kid-human like the superheroes I loved, but mortal after all. This was a lesson not just in recklessness but about learning how to pick myself up from the “proverbial fall”.
