For this piece, I used pages torn from a variety of books including literature, poetry, text books, music, maps, and inspirational material. I added other textured, painted, and hand-made paper, then carefully cut birds from these pages and papers to highlight words and phrases of importance from the chosen literature. The birds are positioned in a spiral-form collage, and the top of the canvas is torn open to allow the motion of flight to continue beyond the boundaries of the piece. In this way, I hope to encourage thoughts on how words, however meaningful or inspirational, have no effect lest they have wings...
