The Faces of John Singer Sargent

Thomas Jordan's avatar Thomas Jordan

John Singer Sargent was an American artist who lived from 1856 to 1925. He painted more than 700 portraits during his lifetime. His portraits are collected in three beautiful volumes which I love to look at and read. As I read the stories of each portrait, I was inspired to first draw (last year's Artprize entry) and then paint in watercolor some of his portraits. His subjects I copied include friends, paid commissions, fellow artists, and even the mysterious Madame X. My 100 or so portraits are a tribute to his enduring genius and the life that he gave to each of his subjects. Please contact me at cmcjordan@att.net with comments.
